As VEX's latest creation, the VEX V5 caused a big stir as soon as it launched. Its main purpose is to replace the previous-generation VEX Cortex EDR.

The VEX Cortex EDR was a first-generation EDR product. Because it was developed earlier, its hardware capabilities are somewhat weaker (roughly a step above the LEGO NXT).

However, the VEX Cortex EDR line is made entirely of metal parts, so compared with other platforms it is still well suited to large robotics competitions.

VEX later released the V5 series to replace the VEX Cortex EDR product line. This generation brings a fully upgraded Brain and sensors, with a color screen, better Smart Motors, a more versatile sensor connection scheme, and more. It is also backward compatible with Cortex-series sensors.
