What Is the Girl Powered Program?

Google and the REC Foundation are committed to highlighting how fun and exciting it is to take part in STEM, and to showing, through many examples, how women are changing the world, providing skills for success, and creating environments where every student's confidence and abilities can flourish. Entries in this challenge will help show the whole robotics community what a Girl Powered robotics team means!

Share your story and help us understand how you bring the Girl Powered program into your experience on a VEX Robotics Competition team. Your personal story will foster new experiences, diverse cultures, and a greater diversity in what a roboticist looks like!

How to Take Part in the Girl Powered Program

First, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Your team must be registered for VIQC or VRC this season.

  • Each team may submit only one entry. However, schools or organizations with multiple teams may each submit one entry per team. For example, Team 123A and Team 123B may each submit an entry, but Team 123A may not submit two. Entries must differ in content and presentation to count as separate entries.

  • Entries submitted in previous years' Online Challenges are not eligible for this year's competition.

Submit a report, and think of it as an article told in pictures. Your entry should combine images (photos, drawings, screenshots, etc.) and text.

  • What comes to mind when you hear “Girl Powered”? How does it show up in your team's robotics?

  • How has your team created a more inclusive environment to attract a diverse group of students?

  • How do you encourage team members to try different roles on the team (design, building, driving, programming, strategy, awards, etc.), and what did they learn from the experience?

  • How do you think diversity of perspectives has changed your robot's design, your team's chemistry, and even your success?

  • Who is your STEM role model, and why? Did this person inspire you to build a more inclusive team or program? How?

Judging Criteria

  • What “Girl Powered” means to the author and how it has shaped their attitude toward robotics

  • How the team has proactively created a more inclusive environment to attract a diverse group of students

  • How team members are encouraged to try the various roles on the team (design, building, driving, programming, strategy, awards, etc.), and what they learned from the experience

  • An explanation of how diversity of perspectives affects robot design, team chemistry, and the ability to succeed

  • A description of a STEM role model and how this person inspires a more inclusive team or program

  • A well-structured, complete entry that combines text and images to tell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end

  • The quality and readability of the writing, including spelling, grammar, and sentence structure

  • The creativity of the final piece: is it enjoyable to read, well designed, and engaging?

Prizes

Once your report meets the requirements above, submit it to the Girl Powered Online Challenge judging system. The judges will score the entries and select 4 Finalist teams and 1 Winner, who will receive great prizes and certificates from VEX headquarters!
